Hudson, NY

JFK: So I have been on this “kick” of exploring local destinations, and I have been falling in love with each town I have visited.  On one of the last weekends of summer, we made our way to Hudson, New York.

What was once a town notorious for “vice” (gambling, prostitution, etc) is now known for their amazing farm to table restaurants, small shops and antiques. Take Amtrak directly to Hudson and enjoy this small town for an “out of town” getaway.

{Disclaimer: Many people recommend a car for this area.  However, we were able to see and do a lot without one}

WHERE TO STAY:  Hudson is filled with Bed and Breakfasts so if you want to stay close to Warren Street, I would suggest getting cozy with the locals. We stayed at the Country Squire Inn where Paul, the Inn Keeper, made us feel right at home.  With amazing breakfast each morning, and guides for around town, he had all of the kowledge we needed to fill our time.

The Barlow is right on Warren Street and is a boutique hotel option. Prefer to have your own place for the weekend?  There are lots of options on Air BnB for nearby accommodations.

WHAT TO DO: We loved the Saturday Farmer’s market where we tried fresh produce, cheeses, and baked goods.  We grabbed a few things and took a taxi out to Hudson-Chatham Winery ($20 taxi each way). This was a great way to spend a beautiful afternoon.  There are vineyards spread all over Hudson but I recommend a taxi if you plan to participate.

We enjoyed Sunday afternoon along the Hudson River with the Spirit of Hudson Cruises.  This 2 hour cruise provided historical commentary down to the Catskills.  With stunning views and the fresh outdoor air, it was a great way to end the weekend.

HOW TO STAY ACTIVE: The Catskills and Greenport Conservation Area are near by as many people travel here to go Hiking.  However,  it is suggested to have a car for these locations.  With that said, it seems that Hudson is beginning to boom with the fitness scene.  From Lyf Fitness (they were closed this weekend) to Sadhana Yoga and Meditation, there are a lot of studios within this small radius.

We took Pilates at Bodhi Spa.  It was a great way to start the day and his first time taking Pilates.  The traditional Mat class is wonderful for full core engagement and strengthens / lengthens your muscles.

Hudson is a great destination for those in the North East.  Close to NYC and Boston, I would highly recommend 2 nights for a weekend getaway.
