Newport, RI

NPT: Newport, Rhode Island was a domestic destination I had been wanting to check out.  For most, it is an ideal summer spot. However, we went in October and I loved the ‘off season’ experience.  While there was still a ‘buzz’ down at the Wharf, we were able to get reservations, avoid the lines at the mansions, and still enjoy sunshine! With that said, here is some insight for your Summer planning or pre-summer getaway before Memorial weekend.

WHERE TO STAY: We love boutique bed and breakfasts and Newport is filled with them!  Check out  Gilded for a contemporary designed B&B with a “Make your own Cocktail – BYOL” bar. The breakfast was served as small plates so you are able to sample an array of ingredients. The bright colors and funky wallpaper really made this place stand out!
Nearby is the famous Hotel Viking which is a part of the Historic Hotels of America. If looking for something a bit more luxury, check out the Chanler Cliff Walk. Also, a Montauk favorite which is a newer addition to Newport is Gurney’s located on Goat Island.  We made our way here one evening for the fire pits, live music, and drinks.
WHAT TO DO: Newport is filled with old mansions from the Gilded Age which you can now tour and explore. Grab a head set and listen to the stories of the previous owners. Hear about the parties in the house, relationships with neighbors, career changes and more! Many of the mansions are National Historic Landmarks.
Make your way to the Wharf – hang out pier side or grab a cruise / ferry to explore.

HOW TO STAY ACTIVE: While there are a few Yoga options in Newport,  my favorite activity was the Cliff Walk! The path combines the natural beauty of Newport with the architectural history of the gilded age. The walk is 3.5 miles with something different to see every few steps. From the Cliff walk, we continued along Bellevue Avenue and checked out the Mansions.
Overall, I LOVED Newport and I cant wait to be back!  It was a perfect weekend getaway with sunshine, activities, good food and history. Have questions? Email me Shelby@Travelfitlove.com
