Queenstown, New Zealand

ZQN: Queenstown, New Zealand – The adventure capital of the world!

New Zealand is a great country for those interested in nature, hiking, the outdoors, and being active. However, it is Queenstown’s beautiful scenery and surrounding areas that makes it one of the best destinations in New Zealand to base yourself for multiple days, to take day trips from.

WHERE TO STAY: I recommend staying on the Lake Esplanade side of town with easy access to restaurants, bars, and the Skyline Gondola .  Queenstown has a range of accommodations but is a great destination to splurge for the Luxury Lodge experience.  Some favorites include Matakauri Lodge , Azur and Eichardt’s Private Hotel.

WHAT TO DO: Looking for an adrenaline rush?  Check out AJ Hackett’s Bungy Jump – the world’s first commercially operated bungy.  The Dart River Safari company offers great full day and half day options which include a jet boat ride, guided walk and Kayaking.

One of the “must do” day trips from Queenstown is to Milford Sound – referred to as the “eighth wonder of the world”. It is beautiful in any weather but is a long day trip from Queenstown by bus. So, if time is short, I would upgrade to a Coach/Fly option. Or stay an evening and trek the Milford Track,  a famous guided hike through Fiordland National Park.

HOW TO STAY ACTIVE: Queenstown is full of activities to get the heart rate up. There are many guided walks, hikes, treks, and experiences to keep your body moving. One of the most popular and accessible hikes is the Famous Routeburn Track. The walk passes through Fjiordland and Mount Aspiring National Parks. There are options for Full Day or overnight experiences which are great options if time allows.

This is a great place to rent a bike and journey through the surrounding area of Queenstown or take a guided tour through the Alpine landscape. The trails are designed for all fitness levels and lead you to beautiful nearby sites.  Ride to Gibbston and enjoy a glass of wine or check out Arrowtown for a historic experience.

My good friends at Southern Discoveries offer a fabulous independent cycle trip to Mt Nicholas and Walter Peak high country farms. A wonderful way to experience an authentic New Zealand farm with spectacular views, while getting in some exercise.

There are so many options based on your level and time while giving  you the opportunity to explore and stay active.

Overall, from kayaking to hiking, biking to trekking, Queenstown is a great place for 3-4 active nights in New Zealand.  For a guided walk and hiking itinerary in New Zealand, click here!
