Washington, DC

IAD/DCA/BWI:  I have to admit….even though I grew up about an hour outside of Washington DC, I never actually explored and toured the city.  So I was excited to have the opportunity to experience the destination when I was sent down to spend the evening with the National Geographic Society.

Washington DC, who is trying to become the 51st State, offers so much for people of all ages and interests.  From the history buff to the artist, foodie to the fit traveler, I could not wait to spend time here.

WHERE TO STAY: Downtown is a great place to base yourself.  I stayed in Embassy Row which was in walking distance to the monuments, Dupont Circle, and Logan Circle.  Courtyard Marriott (lobby in photo below) was right across from the Australian Embassy (<3).  The Hilton is also a great option and I love that it is attached to MINT Gym (which I will touch upon later). From Boutique options like the MayFlower (Autograph Collection), to the St. Regis, Washington is not short of hotel options.

WHAT TO DO : There is something for everyone in Washington DC!   The amount of Museums is amazing – especially on a rainy day.  Some that I would suggest include the Spy Museum and the Newseum. On a beautiful day, I definitely recommend visiting the outdoor monuments and memorials.  It is so captivating to see what has been done to honor those that have fought for our country.

For the foodie, you may enjoy a Culinary tour, tasting your way through popular dishes. For the theatrical artist, check out the Shakespeare Theatre Company and Kennedy Center nearby.

The city also has so many maps and attractions signs, making it really easy to navigate.

HOW TO STAY ACTIVE: MINT GYM was where I got in my morning workout.  There are two locations (Downtown and Dupont) and are a full service gym and spa. The classes weren’t filled and the energy was not like a boutique studio, but I loved how it was connected to a hotel, offering travelers a way to get in their workout. It also had full amenities and facilities for their members.Washington DC is also home to some of our favorite studios – Soul Cycle , Flywheel , and Bar Method to name a few… Be sure to check them out on your next visit 🙂

In the afternoon, I took a walking tour of Washington DC. I love this kind of tour because you learn and see so much more than if you were on your own checking out the sites.  Additionally, it is such a great way to get moving.  The tour will “stop and go” throughout so don’t be nervous of constant hours of walking. From the Washington Monument and White House, to the Lincoln Memorial, ending through the Jefferson Memorial, it was a great half day of seeing the history that Washington DC has to offer.

With a short train or bus ride away from New York City, I highly encourage you to take a weekend to experience this metropolitan city full of history, good food, fun workouts, and more!
